Colorado Springs School District 11 Shuts Down 8 Elementary Schools

The Colorado Springs School District 11 School Board voted yesterday to shut down 8 local elementary schools. A recent Gazette article reads,

“The board decided to move students from Buena Vista, Washington and Whittier elementary schools into the West Middle School building next fall. The Montessori program at Buena Vista will move into the Washington building.

Ivywild, Pike, Longfellow and Jefferson elementary schools will close, and Hunt and Adams elementary students will be combined into the Hunt building.”

Superintendent Terry Bishop said,

“This has been a long process, and it’s been difficult for students, staff, communities,” Bishop said. “There is no more difficult of a situation than dealing with school closures. But I believe what we have done is best for district and will allow us to remain competitive. I believe District 11 will bounce back better than before.”

2/28/2009 UPDATE: A friend of mine recently posted a thoughtful comment regarding the school closings, over on Facebook, it read:

“I live on the westside and my kids have gone to some of those schools.  It’s too bad because those are small schools which I think are better for kids overall.  But I think D-11 is being smart and pretty progressive, creating a K-8 and consolidating some of their schools.  What it means for our school that is staying open is that we will get more kids and therefore have enough enrollment to get an art teacher and other specialists we couldn’t get before.  Having been involved in the start-up of the Montessori program, it is actually good that they are giving it its own building and only having Montessori kids go there.  Constantly mixing in non-Montessori caused a lot of problems.”

Falcon School District 49 Thanks Colorado Springs Home Builders

A full page ad in the Gazette last Sunday was dedicated to thanking some Colorado Springs home builders for helping make the new Falcon - Vista Ridge High School a reality.

The new Vista Ridge High School is located north of Dublin and Black Forest Road (just north of the Colorado Springs Greenhaven Neighborhood) and will be easily accessible from the Templeton Gap expansion to the west. Anyone who lives in D49 knows how desperately a new High School was needed, seeing as even though Sand Creek HS got an expansion it still was WAY overcrowded. The Colorado Springs Real Estate Market can really only grow east … which is D49 land for the most part.

The Falcon School District put out this “Thank You” ad thanking the D49 Board of Education, parents, children and included a very special message to Colorado Springs home builders, for people looking to buy a home in Colorado Springs: ”Please buy your new home from one of these builders who support your kids.”

The Colorado Springs home builders included a variety of companies (totaling 21) - both local builders (like Classic Homes) and national builders (like John Laing Homes).

This project was part of the Falcon Community Builders for Classrooms - “Communities and Schools are Built Together.”

The school will cost $12.5 MIllion to build and is due to open Fall of 2008.
