Six Colorado Springs Homes Make the Nation’s Top High Schools List

Six Colorado Springs high schools make the Newsweek’s list of Top High Schools in the U.S..

Per the Daily Beast website, this was the criteria for determining which schools made the list:

“This year our ranking highlights the best 2,000 public high schools in the nation—those that have proven to be the most effective in turning out college-ready grads. The list is based on six components: graduation rate (25 percent), college acceptance rate (25 percent), AP/IB/AICE tests taken per student (25 percent), average SAT/ACT scores (10 percent), average AP/IB/AICE scores (10 percent), and percent of students enrolled in at least one AP/IB/AICE course (5 percent).”

In all of Colorado, 40 high schools made this list – putting us in the top 15 states for number of top performing high schools.

Nearby top ranking high schools include:

  • Fountain Valley High School [private], Fountain CO – Rank #877
  • Douglas County High School [public], Castle Rock CO – Rank #887
  • Chaparral High School [public], Parker CO – Rank #1064
  • Ponderosa High School [public], Parker CO – Rank #1135

The top school in the nation was the Carol Martin Gatton Academy of Mathematics and Science, in Kentucky – with 100% graduation rate and a 100% college bound rate. According to their website, they are a residential high school and, ” … not typical high school students. Our junior and senior years are spent at Western Kentucky University taking college classes in math, science, and lots of other subjects. While many students are looking for their locker combination, we’re searching for alternative fuels and a cure for cancer. We don’t have an 8 a.m. bell or homeroom, but we’ll finish high school with over 60 hours of college credit. Our home on campus is Schneider Hall, an awesome place to live and learn with friends. Best of all, as a student at the Gatton Academy, tuition, housing, and meals come at no cost to us or our families.” No wonder they are #1!
